Theory Test

I  actively encourage my clients to start to study for the Theory and Hazard Perception Test right from the start, and even before your first driving lesson, the sooner you start the study the sooner you will be ready for the tests and have a great understanding of the rules and regulations of the roads.

There are two parts to the “theory” test, part one consisting of a multiple choice “quiz” and the second being the hazard perception test.

For the multiple choice test, you will answer 50 questions covering topics that cover alertness; attitude; safety; road signs, and much more. A pass in this section of the test requires that you answer at least 43 of the questions correctly in the allocated time.

The second part of the Theory Test is The Hazard Perception Test.

After you have completed the multiple choice part of the Theory Test, you will be given a short break before being shown a video clip about how the Hazard Perception part of the Theory Test works.

To pass this section of the test you’ll need to respond to what the DSA refer to as a developing hazard as soon as it starts to develop. On each clip you can score a maximum of five. However one of the clips will contain two hazards so it is vital that you maintain concentration throughout each and every clip.

For you to pass the theory test both parts must be passed at the same time, so if you fail on one section but pass the other unfortunately you are required to sit both again.

It is possible to achieve an overall score of 75; however the pass mark is 44.

Practical Driving Test

I will be able to inform you when you are ready to take the Practical Driving Test. This can be done either by calling

The practical driving test lasts approximately forty minutes. Once you arrive at the test centre the examiner will call your name.

The examiner will then introduce themselves and ask you to read and sign a declaration before the test commences.

You will then proceed outside and take the required eye sight test to ensure that you can read, with or without glasses, a vehicles registration plate from the minimum distance of 20 metres, (66 feet).

If you fail the eyesight check then you can’t proceed any further.

Once that is out the way you will be asked two questions in the form of a show me and tell me manner. Not to worry though as they are simple questions about the operation of the car and to show that you know how to check that the car is road worthy. Your A49 instructor will ensure that you know these well before the day of your test.
